Every once in a while, I see an idea that has the possibility of radically changing the way we interact and communicate. Remember when you had to dial someone’s home phone in order to ask them to meet you for lunch? Mobile phones blew that model out of the water, and now, with Twitter and Facebook on my iPhone, I don’t even have to call to find out what my friends are up to.
Seattle based Pelago is taking social interaction one step further, by integrating our social behavior into the fabric of our own day-to-day narrative. Their first product, Whrrl, which was released back in 2007, has been installed on my iPhone 3g since day one. The beauty of Whrrl is in it’s simplicity. It is a discovery application that magically bridges the vast mountain of information about the world around me available online, with the people and places I care about most.
When I heard from Jeff Holden, Pelago’s CEO, that they would be debuting the Beta version of Whrrl 2.0 at Twiistup this Thursday, I nearly flipped. Whrrl 2.0 puts each one of us at the center of our own story. It allows us to share moments with each other in the form of both photos and text in real-time, and the
entire experience is organized into a story: who was there, and what happened. To top it all off, the stories have instant, in-the-moment audiences of people who can participate in the story as it unfolds, via Twitter and Facebook. And it gets better: a few lucky Twiistup Attendees will be able to download the Beta onto their iPhone — on the spot!
What more could you expect from a company that makes such cool stuff? Well, a lot actually. Their very own Heather Meeker will be participating as the lucky bacherlorette in the first ever LA Tech Dating Game which takes place at 10:30pm tomorrow night. Want a chance to chat with her before she’s swept off her feet? Better stop by the Pelago table — that’s where I’ll be!
